Does it sometimes feel like you're more of a human doing than a human being? This is how to claim your experience of life and work back...
We can all get caught up in in the hamster wheel of our careers, especially when we're working in fast-paced environments where there is constant pressure to do, do, do.
For high achievers, this is often against a backdrop of a childhood where you were recognised for all your achievements and being top of the class, rather than the core of who you really are as a human being, and what might matter to you.
(That high-achieving identity in itself can create a self-sabotaging, overworking pattern that is very difficult to break free from on your own - a lot of my clients have it!)
Most people I speak to understand logically that the principle of regularly blocking time to reflect and zoom out from the demanding tasks in front of you is a good idea, but they struggle to make it happen.
I get it! It can seem an indulgence (not to mention an impossibility) when your to-do list is growing and deadlines are pressing.
But without it, the cycle continues.
Taking time to reflect and be intentional about what really matters and what's next for you is critical to intentionally creating a rewarding, balanced, happy life and career.
It's the reason the personal development aspects of executive coaching and life coaching are so powerful.
Both were game changers for me.
When I connected to my self-awareness, values, purpose, self-trust and empowering beliefs, my confidence soared.
But more than that. For the first time I really understood what it meant for me to be happy and purposeful long-term, and to know what my definition of success looked like.
✨ I was finally able let go of trying to meet what I 'should' do and find the courage and clarity to follow my instinct, heart and own needs.
✨ I learned to value myself as a human being, not just a human doing.
✨ I started making conscious choices that honoured my values, rather than inadvertently stepping on them and ending up frustrated and disappointed in myself and others.
✨ I began to live with healthy boundaries and I brought balance to my life and relationships.
✨ I could also regulate my emotions better (although I suspect that will always be a work in progress!)
✨ I experienced less overthinking and negative thinking.
✨ I liked myself more and let go of the spiral of judgment and shame, creating new space to love myself.
✨ I had more courage and clarity to take a stand for what mattered to me, and let go of what didn't.
✨ I met my husband. And for the first time in my life, not only was I spending my time and emotions with someone who was good for me, I didn't sabotage it. Woo hoo!
✨ I realised that I was beginning to lead from within and trusting myself, rather than constantly second-guessing myself and looking for external points of reference as to what to do and how to do it.
✨ As for my energy and joy... Well, I had a lot more of both!
You can climb the ladder of success in your life and career without personal development, but it's a lot easier, more intentional, purposeful and joyful with it.
